About the Event
RECLAIM features indoor and outdoor installations comprised of both two and three dimensional art works. The art works are created using salvaged and reclaimed materials from recycling centers around the world.
The outdoor garden installation, ... the Garden Grows : Reclaim, features single use plastic bags from Coker Farm in Bedford, NY. The artist collected the bags and used a process by which she heated them to a consistency that allowed her to hand cut flower petals and plant parts. Once Hovey had the parts to each flower, she hand-wired pieces together to create a variety of flowers and plants for the garden. Inspiration for the installation was drawn from local, national and global pollinator pathway groups - with the hope to inspire locals to reintroduce important pollinators in their gardens for bees, birds, and butterflies.
Inside the gallery, Red Fox is featuring a large butterfly installation suspended from the ceiling, which was also created using single use plastics. The butterflies attract and lull viewers into a calm state, as they float and flutter delicately above the gallery floor.
There is a life-sized "Aquatic Polar Bear" that was created by needle felting pure virgin South African wool. The work represents the artist's interpretation of how polar bears will need to evolve into aquatic mammals to survive, as their natural habitat on glaciers melts.
There is a wall installation of flowers and birds assembled using reclaimed books and wire; Mum | Tweet. Hovey explores a loss for intellect and thoughtfulness as our world becomes more and more reliant on digital and social media.
