30 x 30 inches
acrylic on canvas
Characterized by magnificent fields of paint and color, Jon James’ work utilizes a familiar method, dripping paint, to create incredible depth while also maintaining a formalist theory of flat surfaces.
Interested in abstraction from an early age, James studied art at Cornell University and was introduced to the famed art critic, Clement Greenberg. Influenced by Greenberg’s thoughts on flat surfaces, James explored the notion; what if Jackson Pollock had obsessive compulsive disorder. Through this investigation James came up with his signature method of using gravity to create straight drips of color across the canvas. The measured technique becomes a sort of foil to Pollack’s, the process repeated over and over again creates an intensely precise layered and textured effect without the use of rulers.
